How to...

Conventional Building Methods and Materials Managed in a Green Way

There are various ways of building green; one is using conventional methods but in a green way.  This is the method most people are comfortable with since it only requires changes in bahaviour not changing the method of construction.

Many are wary of unfamiliar building methods and prefer to stick to what they know.  This is an earth-friendly choice when building materials are freely available and do not have to be imported or transported long distances.

Using salvaged building materials is often worth the time and effort for the savings they represent.

Existing Buildings Get Our Attention

We GREEN Existing Buildings

Green construction is the building trend of the decade. In direct response to the growing demand for sustainable, healthy, and energy-efficient buildings, we are looking at ways to make the building or renovation of our existing buildings as green as possible.  This does not have to mean living in a self-sustaining retreat in the hills; at the most basic level it means:

  • not wasting water on the building site
  • not wasting materials and re-using wherever possible
  • ordering materials from local suppliers
  • recycling any stripped-out materials
  • separating packaging material from rubble for recycling
  • using eco building cement
  • using builders who really do follow these practices
  • using architects who design using the climate as a guide, who maximize the use of sun and wind in the heating and cooling of a building.  This brings utility bills down.
  • using low VOC or VOC-free paint
  • avoiding mined or quarried materials
  • only using timber from sustainable forests (look for the FSC stamp), or bamboo
  • using insulation made from natural materials, like cellulose fibre
  • looking at the air quality in a building - and replacing outdated energy-guzzling air conditioners with contemporary Energy Star rated products
  • Keeping the building chemical free to improve air quality
  • Using indoor plants to improve air quality
